Title: Self Care for Counsellors/Psychotherapists with Music and Creative Arts

Presenter: Dr Kirstin Robertson-Gillam

Self care is essential for bringing effective skills to our counselling/psychotherapy practices. Music and the creative arts are ideal ways of accessing the creative mind and bringing new insights and personal understandings for our work as counsellors and psychotherapists. These creative approaches transcend words and verbal dialogue. Singing songs promotes more effective listening and communicative skills through the melodic shapes of songs and the impact of lyrics. Drumming circles can lower stress levels, restore rhythmic balance to the body, encourage rhythmic entrainment to others and enhance communicative skills.

Imagery, visualization and mindfulness involve states of reflective awareness in the present moment, experiencing curiosity, openness, acceptance and love (Siegel, 2007)

Imagery is a thought process that invokes and uses the senses, communicating between perception, emotion and bodily change (Achterberg et al, 1994)

Visualization is directed form of mental imagery and concentration to achieve particular goals for individual well-being (Achterberg et al, 1994)

Mandala drawing: In common use, "mandala" has become a generic term for any diagram, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically; a microcosm of the universe.
